The story begins in mid-seventies Kerala where William - in his late thirties, is a priest in the solitary church in a small coastal town. Rosemary, a young girl in her early twenties, who aspires to make a career in nursing, co-incidentally comes in contact with him. He helps her in getting admissions in chosen institutes and placements in rewarding jobs after completion of her training. Although initially he was just a benefactor to her, soon a deeper relationship ensues between them spurred by an accidental physicality when they end up making love. This results into a phase of deep guilt and self-persecution for both of them individually. William goes to the extent of travelling to distant places under changed identities and making confessions for his sins in front of priests not known to him. Likewise, Rosemary slides towards self-enforced isolation. But as is the wont of such relationships, they are not able to keep away from each other too long and end up colliding again, sexually and emotionally. They become lovers. However, it remains a clandestine affair because the call of the ecclesiastical order expected William to remain a celibate.

The relationship staggers along with no promise and no future despite William assuring her now and then that he hoped to get the permission for marriage on account of expected change of norms from the Vatican and if it did not happen soon, he would leave the order and marry her regardless. Few years pass during which Rosemary also goes through three abortions and acute phases of insecurity. Much as they try to keep their affair private, soon they become the object of gossip and derision of the small town society.

Possessed by his feelings for her, William is not able to reconcile to the eventuality of parting from her. Thus, in order to avoid the social dis-approbation, he proposes that her marriage is arranged with some such person who will honour the fact that Rosemary belongs only to William and he will not have any physical or emotional relationship with her. It will only be an illusionary arrangement for keeping the society at bay for which the person (the husband) would be suitably compensated by William. She is thus wedded to Graham, in a ceremony presided over by William.

But the forces of Anti-Christ seemed to overpower the forces of Christ in William. The man of God gradually capitulates to the satanic powers besieging him and goes on a devilish rampage thereafter. On the other hand, Rosemary, who initially was totally wary of her husband, especially for his apparent obnoxious visage, begins to change in the face of the turn-around in his personality. Graham now abhors the unholy commitment he had given to William and seeks freedom from it. He wants a normal, loving and caring relationship with his wife, just as she desired all along in her life. Realising the impossibility of such a prospect while William was around, they flee to Bombay to escape from his fury. William's wrath falls upon Rosemary's mother, whom he considers the co-conspirator for breaking his alliance with her daughter. In a moment of demonic retribution, he kills her. After her mother's service, just as Rosemary accidentally discovers the shattering truth about the murderer and the law is about to catch William at her behest, he strikes again. On his command the assassins attack Rosemary. She is done to a most brutal death at her own house despite the police protection provided to her.

The tragic story of William ends in a sentence to death for him. In the court, as he is led away to he jail, he makes an earnest and emotional confession to the bereaved husband that he loved her deeply.
